Perforated Window Film

What it is

Perforated Window Film — sometimes called one-way vision film — prints your full-color graphic across a sheet of vinyl that is covered in thousands of tiny perforations. From outside, the printed graphic covers the glass edge to edge; from inside, the small holes let enough light and view through that it does not feel like the window has been blacked out. It is the material to use for a rear window graphic on a vehicle or a large storefront window where you still need to see or be seen through the glass from inside.

Visibility from inside and out

From the outside, the perforations are small enough that the printed image reads as a solid, continuous graphic. From the inside, roughly half the surface is open hole, so it functions similarly to a mesh screen — light and general shapes pass through, and forward vision is workable, though noticeably dimmer than clear glass, especially at night. It performs best on rear and side windows that are not the driver's primary field of view.

A legal note: what can legally go on a front windshield or front side windows varies by state, and many states restrict any window film or graphic in those specific locations regardless of light transmission. Rear windows and windows behind the driver are the safest and most common placement; check your state's window tint and graphic laws before ordering film for a front-facing window.

Why it holds up

The printed graphic is full color on perforated vinyl film. Glass runs hotter than a painted panel in direct sun, so plan to refresh window graphics sooner than door decals. It removes later without leaving adhesive residue or damaging the glass.

How to apply

Perforated film applies to the outside of the glass so the perforation pattern lines up correctly and the image reads sharp from the street; clean the glass thoroughly since dust behind the film shows through the holes.

1. Wash the panel with soap and water, then wipe it with rubbing alcohol and let it dry completely — any wax, dust or grease under the vinyl will shorten how long it holds.
2. Work in a shaded spot between about 60 and 90 degrees F. Direct sun makes the adhesive grab too fast; cold makes it grab too slowly.
3. Peel back a corner of the backing paper and tack the decal in place to confirm the position before committing.
4. Use a strip of painter's tape as a hinge at the top so the decal stays aligned while you peel away the rest of the backing paper.
5. Squeegee from the center outward in overlapping passes to push air out toward the edges, not trap it in the middle.
6. If the order includes transfer tape, squeegee firmly over it, then peel the transfer tape back slowly at a low angle, checking that every letter released onto the surface.
7. Press down any edges or corners that did not fully bond, working from the center out.
8. If a small air bubble remains, prick it with a pin and press it flat — do not try to squeegee a large bubble out through the edge.
9. Give the adhesive time to cure — avoid washing the vehicle for at least 48 hours after installation.

Removal and care

Warm the film with a hair dryer or heat gun on a low setting, then peel it back slowly at a low angle rather than straight up — heat keeps the vinyl from tearing into small pieces. Any adhesive left behind comes off with an adhesive remover or rubbing alcohol, then a regular wash. When it is time to change it, the film peels off the glass without residue; any adhesive left behind wipes off with glass cleaner or rubbing alcohol. Because it is applied to glass rather than paint, extra heat is generally safe to use during removal if the film has been on for a long time and the adhesive has fully set.
