Description
What it is
The VIN Number Sticker puts a vehicle identification number in clean vinyl letters — the 17-character VIN, or a shorter serial number of 11 to 16 characters — cut from single-color vinyl at a letter height of 2, 3 or 4 inches. People look for it as a VIN number decal for a trailer, a VIN sticker for equipment or a chassis number marking. It is a visible identification aid for trailers, chassis and yard equipment whose stamped plate or label is hard to read or missing.
What it does and does not do
The VIN stamped into the frame, riveted on a plate or printed on the manufacturer's label stays the official identifier of the vehicle. A vinyl marking does not replace, restore or re-certify any of those, and we make no claim that a state, an insurer or any agency accepts a vinyl marking as identification. If you are marking a unit because the original is worn, painted over or missing, ask your state motor vehicle office and your insurer what they require before you rely on a sticker, and never cover or remove an original plate or label.
Where it goes
Put the marking on a clean, flat surface close to the original plate — the front wall of a trailer, a frame rail, a panel on a piece of yard equipment — so anyone checking the unit can read both. Place it beside the original, never over it.
Sizes and pricing
Letter heights of 2, 3 and 4 inches are available, with 11 to 17 characters, letters and digits both allowed. A full 17-character VIN is a long line and gets wider as the letters get taller, so measure the surface before you choose a height. The price is per sticker — order one for each unit and see the live price on this page.
Readability by letter height
| Letter height | Rule-of-thumb readable distance |
|---|---|
| 2 in | about 20 ft — close inspection and walk-arounds |
| 3 in | about 30 ft — readable at a walk across a yard |
| 4 in | about 40 ft — readable from a yard truck or forklift |
A VIN marking is normally read up close, so the smallest height is often enough. This is a rule of thumb, not a guarantee — pick the height based on how far away someone typically needs to read it.
Why it holds up
Cut from single-color vinyl in 13 standard colors rather than printed, the marking will not fade unevenly and is rated for 5+ years outdoors. Free transfer tape keeps every character aligned while you apply it, and Reflective film is available if the unit is checked at night. Choose a color that contrasts with the surface; the Car Vinyl material prints it in full color instead.
Who this is for
- Trailer owners and fleets — trailers whose original plate or label is faded, damaged or missing.
- Equipment rental and yard operators — a readable number on chassis and yard equipment.
- Refurbished units — a visible number back on after bodywork.
How to order and proof
Type the VIN on this page or in the Design Studio — no design file is needed. Every order includes a free digital proof showing the exact characters, height and color, with unlimited free changes before anything is cut. Check the proof against your title or the original plate one character at a time; we cut what the proof shows. Standard 17-character VINs never use the letters I, O or Q, so if your number appears to contain one, check it again.
How to apply
- Wash the surface with soap and water, then wipe it with rubbing alcohol and let it dry completely — any wax, dust or grease under the vinyl will shorten how long it holds.
- Work in a shaded spot between about 60 and 90 degrees F. Direct sun makes the adhesive grab too fast; cold makes it grab too slowly.
- Peel back a corner of the backing paper and tack the decal in place to confirm the position before committing.
- Use a strip of painter's tape as a hinge at the top so the decal stays aligned while you peel away the rest of the backing paper.
- Squeegee from the center outward in overlapping passes to push air out toward the edges, not trap it in the middle.
- Squeegee firmly over the transfer tape, then peel it back slowly at a low angle, checking that every letter released onto the surface.
- Press down any edges or corners that did not fully bond, working from the center out.
- If a small air bubble remains, prick it with a pin and press it flat — do not try to squeegee a large bubble out through the edge.
- Give the adhesive time to cure — avoid washing for at least 48 hours after installation.
Removal and care
Warm the film with a hair dryer or heat gun on a low setting, then peel it back slowly at a low angle rather than straight up — heat keeps the vinyl from tearing into small pieces. Any adhesive left behind comes off with an adhesive remover or rubbing alcohol, then a regular wash. It can stay on through winters and regular washing and come off later without stripping paint, as long as the paint underneath is in normal condition.

FAQ
What is a VIN number sticker used for?
It puts a vehicle identification number in readable vinyl letters on a trailer, chassis or piece of yard equipment — typically when the stamped plate or label is worn, painted over or missing and people still need to identify the unit at a glance. It is an identification aid for your own fleet and yard.
Does a VIN sticker replace the VIN plate or the certification label?
No. The stamped number, the riveted plate and the manufacturer's label remain the official identification of the vehicle. A vinyl marking does not replace, restore or re-certify them, so never cover or remove an original plate or label.
Is a vinyl VIN marking legal or accepted by my state or insurer?
We cannot say, and we do not make that claim. Rules for marking and re-identifying trailers and equipment vary by state and by insurer. Contact your state motor vehicle office and your insurance provider before you rely on a sticker, especially if the original identification is missing.
Can I put it on a truck, tractor or car?
This product is made for trailers, chassis and yard equipment. On a road vehicle, leave the original VIN plate and label alone — if you add a visible marking anywhere, put it beside the original, never over it, and check your local requirements first.
How many characters can I enter?
From 11 to 17 letters and digits. A standard VIN has 17 characters; the shorter range covers the serial numbers some older equipment carries.
Why does my VIN not contain the letters I, O or Q?
Standard 17-character VINs never use I, O or Q, to avoid confusion with 1 and 0. The field accepts any letters, so if your number shows one of them, re-check it against the title or the original plate before you approve the proof.
What letter height should I choose?
The options are 2, 3 and 4 inches. A VIN marking is usually read up close, so 2 inches is often enough; go taller if the unit is checked from a distance. A full 17-character line gets long at 4 inches, so measure the surface first.
What colors can I choose?
13 standard colors, cut from single-color vinyl rather than printed, so the color will not fade unevenly over years outdoors. Pick one that contrasts clearly with the surface. A Reflective option is available, and the Car Vinyl material prints the number in full color instead.
Do I see a proof before it is cut?
Yes. Every order includes a free digital proof with unlimited free changes before anything is cut. Compare every character with your title or the original plate before you approve — the sticker is cut exactly as the proof shows.
How many stickers do I need?
One per unit. The price is per sticker, and the live price on the page updates as you change the height and color.
How do I install it?
Clean the surface, tack the sticker in place, squeegee it on from the center outward and peel the transfer tape back slowly at a low angle — the full steps are above, and transfer tape is included free. Wait about 48 hours before washing.
Will removal damage the surface?
No, as long as the paint underneath is in normal condition — warm the film with a hair dryer and peel at a low angle for a clean release.
